anonymous discussion #2

the topic is: harry potter and Christianity.

is it okay to read/let your children read Harry Potter? is it too influenced by witchcraft and therefore "dangerous" or "demonic"? or are Christians too uptight on this one?

what do YOU think?

who I am: A christian who is strong in their faith, and serves with children (both elementary and jr high).

Ultimately, I believe God gave us imaginations and that there is no reason we can't use them. Whether it is to enjoy fantasy novels, sci-fi, or any other genre that some members of the older generation of Christians may find offensive.

The only scriptural argument I can think of for denying someone the enjoyment of this is the scripture regarding practicing witchcraft, but I believe it is a rather large logical jump to go from reading about wizards who play soccer on magical brooms, to thinking that you can actually control dark arts.

So in my mind the question is not "As a Christian Parent, can I let my child read Harry Potter?" but rather "As a Christian parent, when is my child old enough to read Harry Potter?"

However, maybe there is a better argument against books like Harry Potter than this, but I don't think the people who have these arguments are going to know how to use facebook/myspace.

I agree with the first comment.

As a parent you should be teaching about and showing Christ daily. Maybe parents should read the books and engage in conversation with their children about it. What a crazy concept of actually spending time with your kid doing something they enjoy!
